Where do I start with Bible Study?

Initial efforts in Bible study usually start with basic familiarity with the Bible. It’s not enough to just have heard some Bible stories here and there as we were growing up. We really need to read the Bible through with a willingness to learn and remember. The New Testament is a great place to start. Here are descriptions and video of some methods I have tried and found successful.

SOAP method:

Scripture ~ Observation ~ Application ~ Prayer

soap-method-big-chartWhat is S.O.A.P.? It is a way of getting more out of your time in God’s word.

How does it work? It’s quite simple. When you sit for your daily quiet time read the bible as you normally would with one simple difference. Underline or make note of any verses that jump out at you with special significance. This is the basis for diving deeper and using S.O.A.P.

OIA method:

Observation ~ Interpretation ~ Application

I first learned of Inductive Bible Study through Bible teacher Kay Arthur

Step 1: Observation—What does the passage say?
Step 2: Interpretation—What does the passage mean?
Step 3: Application—What am I going to do about what the passage says and means?

Three Simple Steps (OIA) for Studying the Bible

5 Ps method:

Position ~ Pore ~ Pull ~ Pose ~ Plan

I first learned of this method of Bible Study through Bible teacher Priscilla Shirer. One of the keys of this method is to choose just a couple of verses each day. Do not try to take on large passages at a time. This will allow you to break the verses down and apply them to your life.

1. Position yourself to hear from God.
2. Pore over the passage and paraphrase the major points.
Look for the who, what, when, where, and why of the verse
3. Pull out the spiritual principles.
What is God teaching? What is He revealing about Himself?
4. Pose the question.
Form a personally directed question from each of the spiritual principles.
5. Plan obedience and pin down a date.
God speaks to be obeyed—not just to hear Himself talk.

Writing out Scripture by Hand

handwriting-from-bibleWriting, you mean handwriting? Pen to paper, the old fashioned way?

If you are like me, I type more than I write by hand these days. It is an outcome of the digital world in which we live. Are you active in Bible study? Do you read scripture? Have you ever considered handwriting special verses from your Bible?

“….he should write a copy of the teachings on a scroll for himself, a copy taken from the priests and Levites. He should keep it with him all the time and read from it every day of his life. Then he will learn to respect the Lord his God, and he will obey all the teachings and commands.  Deuteronomy 17:18-19  NCV

There are so many benefits from writing out scripture by hand.

  1. The act of handwriting slows you down from the quick pace of reading. When I slow down, the content of the scriptures seeps down into my soul.
  2. There is something about physically writing down information that helps me retain it.
  3. Handwriting is beautiful and intimately personal.
  4. When you write it down, you can go back to reread and even make notes about ways the Scripture impacted your life.
  5. Everytime I put my spiritual thoughts on paper, I am leaving a spiritual legacy. I plan to invest in the spiritual future of my children by passing on several things: my Study Bible with my notes and thoughts, my prayer journal with handwritten prayers for them and other members of our family, and my handwritten scripture. How much I would give to have some of my favorite verses written by my precious God-fearing grandmother’s hand!

When I realized I wanted to hand-write scriptures, I looked for some plans. Many people choose favorite verses, or verses that correspond with a Bible study in which they are currently participating. Some people write out a chapter of the Bible (i.e. one of the Psalms) or an entire book of the Bible (i.e. James). Others have chosen to write out all verses pertaining to a particular topic (ie. love, forgiveness). I chose to go by a monthly plan, a couple of verses every day for a month. References and samples at bottom of this post.

write-by-handOnce you decide which plan suits your needs, the fun part begins. You can choose to write your scripture on loose leaf paper, in a spiral notebook, or in a special journal. I bought a big collection of ultra-fine tip sharpie pens (but the will bleed through, causing you to write on one side only). If you want to doodle as you go, you might want some colored pencils or highlighters. You can make this a simple daily task or a beautiful piece of art, it’s your choice.

Living Proof Live Simulcast 9.12.15

What a wonderful Beth Moore simulcast. She was speaking live from Wichita, Kansas to more then 150,000 women. Instead of attending at a local church, I decided to buy the digital pass from Lifeway to watch it from my home computer.

2015-09-12 11.09.51

Genesis 25: 19-34   Brothers are born.

  • Jacob – his name means ‘supplanter’ because he was grabbing his brother’s heal – as he was born.
  • Esau was exhausted and eating red stew. “Score” to undervalue it, with contempt. Esau despised his birthright and sold it to Jacob.

wichita roomWhat is my stew?

  • Who do we have trying to deceive us? The Father of Lies he is not just a heal grabber, he is a foot grabber.
  • Esau was exhausted. The enemy can keep us so exhausted, that we are vulnerable to undervalue our birthright.  And any stew will do. That’s when we want something that we do not know how to fund…that mindset or comfort that we turn to.
  • Any stew will do – whatever works on you. This has gone on so long – I am so tired. Exhaustion makes us hungry – hungry for the stew and the stew keeps us distracted from the value of our birthright.
  • The irony is that Esau would have gotten to eat the stew eventually, but he wanted it NOW. That thing that would have been your blessing, becomes your pot of stew.

romans 8-15

Romans 8:15  “For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back (back again) into fear, but you have received the spirit of adoption, as sons by whom we call Abba Father”.

In most cases, we consider the opposite of slavery to be liberty. Here, the opposite of the spirit of slavery is the spirit of adoption.

Abba Father – knowing who we belong to, knowing our Father, knowing our birthright as sons and daughters. With that will come our freedom to the spirit of fear.

Don’t fall back again into fear. There seems to be no end to the opportunity to FEAR. We gave come here to get some Audacity!  These are not days for wimps, but to have Audacity, for individuals and as the church. Audac ity is our legacy.

spirit of adoption

Setting the day the Lord will return is foolish. When someone sets the day – He’s NOT coming that day. because the bible says: No one will know the day or hour! Ond day sitting beside the Father, Jesuswill hear “son, go get your bride”.  Glocal concerns and  calamities will spiral the fear and cover the Earth. FEAR can drive a lot of things:

  • Insecurity
  • Anger and rage

A few global things that have happened lately:

  1. Japan – floods
  2.  Indonesia – volcano
  3. Nepal – earthquke
  4. Iraq – Isis attacks
  5. Syria – civil war refugees
  6. Green – financial crisis
  7. Africa – ebola

Fear is going to go viral around this globe, and we cannot go with it. We have a different virus to catch and it’s the Jesus Virus!  Have audacity – with the Holy Spirit of the living God. Listen. Courage and Love and Joy will be our calling cards in a day when people will want to hate us. Do you despise your birthright? This is about our witness to the world. Even when they do not like what we stand for, they will still be drawn to us because we are not in fear with the rest of the world. We are not in a state of denial. Yes we know, but we are secure that at some point, this world is going to have to be completely redone, because it is wearing out. This world is groaning because it needs Jesus to come back. This I know, Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. He is the Prince of Peace. He will set up goverance on this planet. He will renew the earth and the heavens. This knowledge make me secure. I know there is a plan for this globe! No matter how much this globe rocks, He holds it in his hands! We need boldness!

Compare these verses:

Acts 2:17

In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.

2 Timothy 3:1-9

But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.

They are the kind who worm their way into homes and gain control over gullible women, who are loaded down with sins and are swayed by all kinds of evil desires, always learning but never able to come to a knowledge of the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these teachers oppose the truth. They are men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected. But they will not get very far because, as in the case of those men, their folly will be clear to everyone.

It will be the Best of Times and the Worst of Times! At the exact same time, these things will happen. We don’t know when He is coming, but we know it is soon.

Jesus said, all authority has been given to Him (Jesus). Because of this, we can have Audacity.  Now go….

Analogy:  We all want to shut ourselves up in church like a bunch of chickens. Chicken Little, “the sky is falling”.  The sky is not going to fall!  The sky is going to roll back like a scroll ! Every eye will see the Lord of Lords! He has all authority, so we can have Audacity!

audacity defined

Your calling is outside your ability to perform it. Only the Holy Spirit in you can do it.

ex) It is normal not to ever forgive them for what they’ve done but Audacity says I’m not restrained by what is normal.

We can either:

  1. stay with in the NORM
  2. step in our BIRTHRIGHT

Intrepid Boldness

Intrepid – resolute fearlessness, purposeful resoliving to be fearless.

Audacity is not being fearless, but having the ‘guts’ to do it – through the fear. Have the nerve to do it anyway!

2 Corinthians 3:7-12   Now if the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory, transitory though it was, will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious? If the ministry that brought condemnation was glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness! 10 For what was glorious has no glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory. 11 And if what was transitory came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts!  12 Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold.

What is AUDACITY? The combination of GUTS and GLORY!  Will you have the guts to give your life completely to the outrageous glory of the Lord Jesus? I’ve got the guts to give him glory! For some of us, we’re not afraid, we are asleep. We are busy on social media.

Ephesians 5:14-16  14 This is why it is said:  “Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will  shine on you.”  15 Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.

Romans 13:11-12   11 Do this because we live in an important time. It is now time for you to wake up from your sleep, because our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed. 12 The “night”[a] is almost finished, and the “day” is almost here. So we should stop doing things that belong to darkness and take up the weapons used for fighting in the light.

Arise. Awake. Live purposefully.   Sometimes the devil……..roars like a lion.  But sometimes, he….sings us a lullaby!

Rock-a-bye Christian, lulled by the world

When the wind blows, all hell will unfurl

stay in your sleep, distracted or scared

so when I wreck havoc, you won’t be prepared!

We are called to be Mighty Women of God!  We are called to be Mighty Women of God!  We are called to be Mighty Women of God!

mighty women of god

Ephesians 6:10 Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might!

There will be a chronicle of the ward that took place on this Earth. The residents of heaven are cheering us on because this is our time – we are warriors. You want to be on that list of and so do I!

#1  The audacity to make an unseen savior the supreme romance of your life.

Screenshot 2015-09-20 07.32.18

We are in desperate need of the redemption of romance in our day, not only personally but culturally, and also globally.  (Our culture has ruined romance with betrayal, infidelity, deception, divorce, abandonment, prostitution, sexual perversion, victimism, someone falling out of love with us,  pornography.) Romance retains mystery. When all the mystery is gone….    Why do we put romance out there for the world to see (i.e. putting engagement or marriage cermony on YouTube)? Where is the mystery? Where is the romance?

audacious book cover

There was only one human man who was a man after God’s own heart – David. David was in love with God. Read David’s words. It is a sample for us.

This is what the book (Audacious) is about ~ it’s the love thing. Beth’s love affair with God that has purpelled her for 30+ years. If you will let Him – He will ROMANCE you! And you will never ever find Him falling out of love with you or getting bored with you. The best thing you can do for your family is to be in love with God!

#2  The audacity to live in the tension that comes with loving in truth (the nerve to stay in the word).

We may begin to believe that to love, we have to move away from scripture. Jesus loved people.  Some say “I just want to love with the love of Jesus.”  I do too, but He never loved like that,  He loved in TRUTH.  The worst thing we can do for our culture is to take away the truth.

In this day, of the unpopularity of Christianity, we have to stand in the tension between love and truth.  We will do a huge disservice to mankind to separate love from the truth. There is going to be a big Y in the road and we will see those who walked together: some will go with scriptures and some will separate themselves.  Moving away from truth is an avalanche.

Romans 10:17   Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message,1 and the message is heard through the word of Christ.2

The enemy knows that if he can get us to put down the sword of the spirit (God’s word), we will eventually, put down the shield of faith (our faith in God).  There is a powerful link between God’s Word in us and answer to prayer.

John 15:7   If you remain in me and follow my teachings, you can ask anything you want, and it will be given to you.

When we have less answer to prayer, we will have less faith, then less answered prayer, then less faith.  Do you see where this avalanche goes.

Acts 4:29-30 And now, Lord, listen to their threats. Lord, help us, your servants, to speak your word without fear. Help us to be brave by showing us your power to heal. Give proofs and make miracles happen by the power of Jesus, your holy servant.

His word was meant to be a fire in our bones. We were built for FIRE. You are going to get your fire from someplace. The craving for fire will consume us.  We have to have a HOLY FIRE in our bones. The irony of the latter days is that we who are called to be peculiar in this world, to be lights in the darkness will come to look exactly like the world. We will have done it for our sympathy for them. We will honestly convince ourselves that we love them and want to embrace them.  The profound deception of the latter days is that we think and convince ourselves that we will be better for the world by being less scriptural. It is proposterous. The first word that will drop out of our vocabulary will be repentance.

Hang onto your Bible with all of your might.

Every word has a phrase.

Every phrase has a scripture.

Every scripture has a chapter.

Every chapter has a book.

Every book has a testament.

Both those testaments form one Bible.

All scripture is God-breathed.  Hang onto it with all your might. Lord, call us bak to your word. We are trying to slay demons with a butter knife. We have lost our edge. Get back in the scriptures. Stand with the scriptures – no matter what. We don’t always understand everything or can explain everything. But we love with everything we’ve got and we stand in the trust of God.  Call us back Lord, to love, to the greatest romance, and to your word.

#3  The audacity to pray for astonishing works of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 4:29-32   29 Now, Lord, consider their threats and enable your servants to speak your word with great boldness. 30 Stretch out your hand to heal and perform signs and wonders through the name of your holy servant Jesus.”  31 After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly. 32 All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.

We want you Jesus! Give us all we can bear.

Remember when we compared 2 Timothy 2:1 and Acts 2:17.  There will be great sociological disasters (more than tornados, famine, etc but man in peril) and great spiritual works – at the same time.

The Peril and the Outpouring

You are NEVER going to live bolder than you pray!  Prayer is our communication with God. It doesn’t have to have a lot of words. If you begin to have that firey love for Him, no one will have to coax you into talking to Him. Pray boldly for huge outpourings of the Holy Spirit. Pray it over your church. Get plugged in. The enemy goes for the one isolated from the flock.  Beth is not at all cynical about what is going on in the church. Raise up those who feel called to share the Word.  If you feel this calling, study. There is no teacher who doesn’t love to study. If you don’t, then you love to talk, not teach!

We must have audacity in our prayer life! The enemy cannot read your mind. If you want to say something you want him to hear, say it out loud. Be bold in prayer.

Ask boldly for God’s favor in your life. At the same time as the sacred romance, life on earth continues with dirty laundry and all.  Do you have the audacity to deal with them both?  People need to see you living life. Things get dirty down here, but are we willing to live sanctified lives down here on earth.

This is going to sound legalistic.  Ladies, we’ve got to have active prayer lives! I hear all the time, “but I need my sleep”. Yes, I know you do, but hell has come for your family, but nevermind, go ahead and sleep 45 extra minutes because you need your sleep. Hell has come for your church, your marriage, your life.

Romans 8:15   And so we should not be like cringing, fearful slaves, but we should behave like God’s very own children, adopted into the bosom of his family, and calling to him, “Father, Father”.   NLT

The cry of Abba Father is full of fervor.

#4  The audacity to forgive and live forgiven.

Acts 7:54-60    54 The Jewish leaders were stung to fury by Stephen’s accusation and ground their teeth in rage. 55 But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed steadily upward into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at God’s right hand. 56 And he told them, “Look, I see the heavens opened and Jesus the Messiah standing beside God, at his right hand!”  57 Then they mobbed him, putting their hands over their ears, and drowning out his voice with their shouts, 58 and dragged him out of the city to stone him. The official witnesses—the executioners—took off their coats and laid them at the feet of a young man named Paul. 59 And as the murderous stones came hurtling at him, Stephen prayed, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60 And he fell to his knees, shouting, “Lord, don’t charge them with this sin!” and with that, he died.

You have never done anything as powerful as to forgive them. It is our birthright. How to forgive? Be full of the Holy Spirit.  There is a trusting innocence in these words of Stephen. The children were taught to pray at bedtime. “Into your hands I commit my spirit.”

Ancient Jewish Prayer.   Psalm 31:5   Into your hands I commit my spirit; deliver me, Lord, my faithful God.

Luke 23:34   Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

Charis = grace.  Do not hold their sins against them. Unforgiveness is pushing the “thing” taht is between you at arms length against their chest to keep that person away from you. It is between you and them.

holding sin against you

Revelation 2:1-4  To the angel of the church in Ephesus write:  These are the words of him who holds the seven stars in his right hand and walks among the seven golden lampstands. I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false. You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary.  Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first.

What makes for certain that we will step into the life we were born to live is…. the person that is in you when you are fired up with a love for the Lord Jesus Christ, when you love Him more than anything you can see, touch, or feel, THAT is the truest you that will ever be!

In some cases, your first love is your hate. The ferver that it takes for hate is taking the space that was there for your first love. Your unforgiveness is taking up the space of your first love for Jesus. Can’t have both first love for Jesus and unforgiveness at the same time! To enbrace first love, we have to give up our unforgiveness. But to embrace your unforgiveness is to give up your first love for Jesus.  You cannot have both! We have let our feeling be hurt and we are allowing it to stand in our way. All of us have our hands full with something.

Unforgiveness   vs.   First Love for Jesus

Shame does not honor God in any way. If you believe God, you would come to broken-hearted repentance, and accept His forgiveness. Jesus went to all that trouble. Are we not going to live unforgiven? The Son of Man has the authority to forgive all sin.

Luke 5:24   But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.”

Do you have chronic regret? Beth has only found one good remedy…. lose faith in yourself and put your faith in Christ. Luke 7 says, those who have been forgiven much, have a jump start to love much. Don’t let it be in vain. Love Him with everything you have got.

Colossians 2:13-15   13 When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, 14 having canceled the charge of our legal nailing our sinsindebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. 15 And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

Everyone one of our sins were nailed to that cross.

Everything we have suffered here…..is nothing compared to the glory of what is coming.

#5  The audacity to hold tight with all your might to Romans 8:18

Romans 8:18    18 I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us.

All that you have suffered, all the heartbreak…… You are not just going to be ‘alright’. You are going to live happily ever after. I’m going with you Father. You are my destiny.  Jesus is everything!

#6  The audacity to walk in humility.

Whatever would cheat you of Jesus, lay it down.

We are living in a day of rampant narcissism so it will take audacity to walk in humility. This is audacity…..

Put 0% confidence in the Flesh.

And put 100% confidence in the Holy Spirit.

In God’s economy, the way up is DOWN! Out might is in our humility, because our height is in our Humility.  The audacity to foresake jealousy. Jealosy is rooted in pride. It takes audacity.

Phillippians 2:7  But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.

Of no reputation?  Umm, we want our  “follows” , our “likes”.

It takes Audacity to go last and put others first. The audacity to trust God when it looks like someone is getting away with something. Have the audacity to trust him on this and not to tell somebody off when we want to in the worst kind of way.

We are wearing the shield of Christ on our foreheads. No longer a slave, I am a child of God.

It’s time to be big-girls and live Audaciously! Enter into the holy and sacred romance of our lives. To do this – let go of some things. We give ourselves to you Father. Take it Father, we give it to you.  Romance and woo us Lord. I receive you and I want you Lord to be the supreme romance of my life! I don’t know how to do it, but I want it more than anything in this world.

Get over it and get on with it. Have the Audacity to live with all your heart, what scripture blatantly promises, that no suffering here, compares with the glory we will see there! You are not tragedy girl, you are miracle girl. Love in truth and have the audacity to serve with complete humility with zero confidence in flesh and 100% confidence in Christ’s ability. All authority is given to Jesus.

Therefore sister, GO, DO WHAT YOU WERE CALLED TO DO!!!

No matter how many needs there are – God sees me. Every single tear I have cried was not wasted. God knows each and everyone. He knows the requests we have not even prayed yet.  His eye is on ME!

fishermen matt 5 v.1-11

Matthew 5: 1-11  MSG

1-3 Once when he was standing on the shore of Lake Gennesaret, the crowd was pushing in on him to better hear the Word of God. He noticed two boats tied up. The fishermen had just left them and were out scrubbing their nets. He climbed into the boat that was Simon’s and asked him to put out a little from the shore. Sitting there, using the boat for a pulpit, he taught the crowd.
When he finished teaching, he said to Simon, “Push out into deep water and let your nets out for a catch.”
5-7 Simon said, “Master, we’ve been fishing hard all night and haven’t caught even a minnow. But if you say so, I’ll let out the nets.” It was no sooner said than done—a huge haul of fish, straining the nets past capacity. They waved to their partners in the other boat to come help them. They filled both boats, nearly swamping them with the catch.
8-10 Simon Peter, when he saw it, fell to his knees before Jesus. “Master, leave. I’m a sinner and can’t handle this holiness. Leave me to myself.” When they pulled in that catch of fish, awe overwhelmed Simon and everyone with him. It was the same with James and John, Zebedee’s sons, coworkers with Simon.
10-11 Jesus said to Simon, “There is nothing to fear. From now on you’ll be fishing for men and women.” They pulled their boats up on the beach, left them, nets and all, and followed him.

It can be upsetting that God sometimes asks you to do the impossible. That useless place in your life (that you wonder why God let this happen) – that is what God will use! He sets you up for a situation where you will not ‘catch any fish’. Allowing an empty place in our life that we cannot fill – is a set-up to make room for Him. In His sovereignty, He is leaving space for His feet in the boat: the God Margin!

If you will do what you can, God will do what you can’t!

Love is not a feeling, it’s a choice. Act it and your feelings will catch up. Navigating your life, you can hear the voice of God. The Holy Spirit abides in you but you are guided by the Word of God. Don’t think you need someone to connect you – dive into the Word yourself. Reading the Word yourself – you learn Him and His personality and you allow Him to speak to you! The Holy Spirit illumines the Word of God to leap off the page into your heart and mind.satan disguises as angel of light

Once you KNOW God, it will be very apparent when someone say something outside His word. You learn to discern His voice.  Once your hear the voice of God, you will be ruined for church as usual. Come expectantly – that you can and will hear the voice of God. When you know what the enemy believes about you (how afraid he is of Christ in you), you face your battles in a different way. Some of us have an uphill battle when we get home. The way we face it makes all the difference. The victory has already been given to us. The battle is not bigger than our God! Know who you are in Christ. “Holy Swagger!”

The 5 Ps of Bible Study

1. Position yourself to hear from God.

Find a place to meet with God (in silence and solitude).  Your car ca be your sanctuary! Or your desk at work… arrive early and sit quietly and still for 5 minutes before you start your day.

2. Pore over the passage and paraphrase the major points.

To pore over is not scanning. Read it three times.  Engage by imagining yourself in the situation of the person in the Bible verse. You practice the presence of God, sometimes in the quiet and sometimes in the noise. i.e. While doing your chores, you can practice your 1-2 verses.

3. Pull out the spiritual principles.

What does this scripture mean? What does this teach me about God? about His personality?

“The more you know God, the more clearly you can hear God!”  ~Henry Blackaby, author of Experiencing God

God graciously uses our mistakes to help us know how to hear him better.

4. Pose the questions.

Do I act like I believe what I have just written down? The conviction of the Holy Spirit is what you want (not the condemnation of the enemy). Condemnation says, you will never get out of this. Conviction says, you need revelation and I will help you.

5. Plan obedience and pin down the date.

Why do we not strategize about our obedience in faith? Plan a date to see it through. God doesn’t speak to be heard, He speaks to be obeyed.

When using the 5 Ps strategy: don’t just choose verses at random – choose a book at a time and don’t rush.  Suggested resources: “Can We Talk?” series and “SEED” pack 1 and pack 2 (arranged by topics).

Four Things to embed in our hearts and minds!

1) Be Fearless

The children of Israel were surrounded. Doesn’t mean you won’t feel fear, but you won’t wallow in it. Stand in confidence on the Word of God (300+ places in scripture say, ‘do not be afraid’). The spirit of fear is not from God, but from the enemy. Ask yourself – why is the enemy working that hard to put fear in me over this? There must be something pretty important that God is doing in my life. We should not be afraid because there is a father who loves us.

2) Be Still

Resist the flesh – do not lean on your own understanding. Ephesians 6:14 Stand your ground. Standing requires resolve – plant your feet.

3) Be Watchful

See what God will do – so that you will remember. There is something to be thankful for right now. He is doing little miracles every day. Fear causes you to forget the goodness of God. Build a track record of faith – by keeping your eyes open. Watching God do big things gives you confidence.

4) Be Quiet

Every word that comes out of your mouth – give the enemy words to fight you with. Be quiet! Our words are power!

Father, we ask you to bless this powerful woman of God!

The Jesus Girls with Priscilla Shirer ~ August 2014

The Anointing

The moment we became believers in Christ, we received the Holy Spirit. The anointing of God rests on our lives. “Although often symbolized this way, the Holy Spirit is not a ghost or a dove or a fire. The Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity with all the power, the strength, and all the glory,” says Priscilla Shirer, bible teacher in lesson 1 of Anointed, Transformed, Redeemed: A Study of David. With God’s anointing we can face everything that we’ll encounter in this life, with joy, courage, and peace.  Wow, that is wonderful – but can I really do that? No, I can’t, but God can, through the anointing of His Holy Spirit!  We can be empowered to do what we cannot do in our own power. The definition of the anointing suggested in the study is: the divine enablement to accomplish a divine task or a supernatural empowering to accomplish supernatural goals. That means – doing daily things in a supernatural way. Oh yes, I do need some of that!

 the holy spirit the anointing

The anointing you received from Christ lives in you. You don’t need anyone to teach you something else. Instead, Christ’s anointing teaches you about everything. His anointing is true and contains no lie. So live in Christ as he taught you to do. (1 John 2:27, God’s Word translation)

God equips us to handle what we will face. Once you really think about it, understand it, and accept it, it is encouraging to know that we are not dependent merely on our own skills and abilities. As children of God, when we trust in Him, He can work supernaturally in us. With reliance on God, we can walk confidently into situations that we feel inadequate to handle! Priscilla Shirer says, “what the Lord calls, He establishes!” Because God is greater, His plans are higher. Our job in all this is to TRUST and to OBEY.  I don’t know about you, but I find myself in places where I HAVE to rely on God to be successful. This is our opportunity to show Him that we love Him, we serve Him, and we rely on Him for our very existence.

It is not that we think we are qualified to do anything on our own. Our qualification comes from God. He has enabled us to be ministers of his new covenant. This is a covenant not of written laws, but of the Spirit. The old written covenant ends in death; but under the new covenant, the Spirit gives life.  (2 Corinthians 3:5-6, NLT)

The bible teaches that we WILL come under attack, but when we do, we are to ‘resist’. That is an active, defensive stance, standing firm. We can walk in full confidence that Satan is already defeated. The Word says so. The hard part can be in the period of waiting, but we can stand firm in our faith. God will be victorious!

But someone who does not know, and then does something wrong, will be punished only lightly. When someone has been given much, much will be required in return; and when someone has been entrusted with much, even more will be required.  (Luke 12:48, NLT)

Blessing in abundance is available to us as children of God. Lord, help me to know my place in your kingdom. I trust your Holy Spirit to guide me through this life. Let my decisions and actions bring glory to Your holy name.

I hope you enjoy ‘Holy and Anointed One’ by Jake Hamilton.

Here is a teaching on The Anointing by one of my favorite bible teachers, Joyce Meyer.

Hardly anyone is immune to hard times. At the time of the hardship, it is difficult to see the silver lining. But after it has all passed, and I’ve discovered that I did indeed make it through, I can often get a glimpse into the meaning of it all. I love it when I look back and realize that God was with me all the while, guiding my decisions, and setting me on the right course. It is then that I know I should trust Him more fully and look to Him more quickly during those times of hardship or transition.

cross in the hands

I recently participated in a bible study with three well-known bible teachers. It was my first time really getting exposure to Priscilla Shirer. She called this awareness of God’s presence a “God-Consciousness”. She said “we must each make a personal decision to restore the centrality of God’s presence and authority in the epicenter of our lives”. God must be in the center of our daily living.

For the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous and his ears are open to their prayer. But the Lord’s face is against those who do evil.  (1 Peter 3:12, NET)

With each year that passes, I aim to do just that, to flood my every thought and every action with God until His will is what is foremost on my mind for every decision or interaction. Priscilla said, “an awareness of God’s presence will cause us to reconsider daily decision we normally make”. And as I become better and better at this God-Consciousness, I do see God’s influence on my daily choices, even in the small areas: television, novels, movies, conversations, friendships, spending , vacations, thoughts, actions, etc.

A God-Consciousness can make a serious practical impact on the decisions and circumstances in your life as well. Recognizing and acknowledging God’s presence and perspective will alter your decisions and ulimately change outcomes.  ~Priscilla Shirer;  Anointed, Transformed, Redeemed: A study of David

happy moments

Lord, help me to see You in everything I do. I want to make good choices that will bring honor to your name. Help me Father to not feel anxious or angry or frustrated with my lack of ability to handle what comes. I give it to you Father! Show me Your way so that I may walk in it!

The Lord’s Prayer

The Model Prayer

“Therefore, you should pray like this: Our Father in heaven, Your name be honored as holy. 10 Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And do not bring us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.  Matthew 6:9-13  HCSV

During the fall of 2013, I completed a self-directed DVD study of the curriculum “Lord, Teach me to Pray: Practicing a Powerful Pattern of Prayer” @2007. This was my first experience with speaker, author, and bible study teacher Kay Arthur of Precept Ministries. The study led me in detail through each portion of The Lord’s Prayer. When Jesus said, “pray in this way”, He was giving the disciples a WAY to pray, not just a PRAYER to pray. As Kay taught, I learned that each phrase has a specific theme, and this pattern is the sample for us.

  • Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. (WORSHIP: God is Holy!)
  • Your kingdom come. (ALLEGIANCE: You will reign supreme.)
  • Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. (SUBMISSION: We give you authority over our lives.)
  • Give us this day our daily bread. (PETITION & PROVISION: We trust you to meet our needs.)
  • And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. (CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS: Forgive us.)
  • And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. (WATCHFULNESS & DELIVERANCE: Save us from the enemy.)
  • For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever, Amen. (WORSHIP: You are our everything.)

I invite you to listen to this rendering of Jesus speaking The Lord’s Prayer during the Sermon on the Mount. Hearing the words spoken gives such a full, rich experience.

As a result of this study, I am learning to begin my prayer time with praise for our Father, acknowledging and respecting who He is. He is with me always. He knows my need far better than I can begin to understand. Through our trials, He endures. I rest in His sovereignty. I have learned to pray TO the Father, but IN the name of Jesus who gives us access to God through His death. Kay encourages us to spill it all out….aloud….and on our knees. Prayer puts us in the knowledge of God’s sovereignty, in the palm of His hand. Everything that comes into our hand is filtered through His love. I have also learned that our allegiance toward God IS going to be tested. We cannot think we can get all we need on our own. Total dependence on God is required.

Prayer is:

  • knowing who God is (having that relationship)
  • knowing what He says (having that understanding)
  • putting the governing of our life on His shoulders (surrendering to His will and trusting Him)

Kay points out that we have a high calling, to intercede in prayer for others who (in variety of circumstances) all need the touch of God in their lives. Jesus intercedes from heaven for me. The Holy Spirit intercedes in me. And I, as a priest of God, have the privilege of praying for and interceding for others – the lost and the saved.  p.74.

But seek (aim at and strive after) first of all His kingdom and His righteousness (His way of doing and being right), and then all these things taken together will be given you besides.  Matthew 6:33 AMPL

Don’t leave this post without listening to the clip below. When I close my eyes, I can only imagine that this might be what heaven will sound like.  Enjoy….
